Charminar, a major landmark in the city is the most impressive structure in Hyderabad. The monument, built by Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah in 1591 to commemorate the obliteration of Plague from the city, is a striking colossus in granite, lime, mortar and, some say, pulverized marble.

As per a historical anecdote, Quli Qutb Shah pleaded to the Lord to give relief from the plague and took the pledge to erect a 'mosque' in return. In consequence, construction of the mosque started and it came to be known as 'Charminar'. The four spires (minarets) of the mosque probably portray the first four khalifas of Islam. This four storey monument has the mosque on the top-most storey that includes 45 covered prayer spaces and some open space to accommodate more people for Friday prayers.

Char Minar is a prominent square monument, having extent of 20 meters height on its each side.
